How to Keep Mosquitoes Away From Your Home

Mosquitoes breed in standing water and can spread diseases such as dengue and West Nile virus. In South Florida, the season lasts most of the year.

Drain standing water

Once a week, empty and scrub anything that holds water: flower pots, buckets, birdbaths, pet bowls left outside and clogged gutters. Even a bottle cap of water can breed mosquitoes.

Cover up and use repellent

Wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk, when many mosquitoes are most active. Use an EPA-registered insect repellent and follow the label.

Keep them outside

Repair window and door screens, keep doors closed and use air conditioning when you can. Indoor and patio bug zappers can help with flying insects in small spaces.

Know when to see a doctor

Seek medical care if you develop a fever, rash, joint pain or headache after mosquito bites, especially after travel.
